Uncover the History Behind U.S Virgin Islands
Saint Ursula and her Virgin Followers, despite their demise under unknown circumstances in Cologne, must be feeling vindicated. I would be if a place as beautiful as the USVI (United States Virgin Islands) is named after me. During his second voyage in 1493, Christopher Columbus decided to just do this.
The island is the ancestral home of the Ciboney, Arawak and the Carib peoples. After the arrival of the Europeans, the island changed sovereignty from Spain to Great Britain to the Netherlands to France to Denmark-Norway and finally to the United States.
One of the saddest stories of slavery comes from this island. It is said that several African slaves shot themselves dead to escape being enslaved. It is also the home of the first noteworthy rebellion by slaves in the 'New World' in 1733.
There is a thing or two you will learn here about the Americas. Let it not be said that I did not warn you about the beauty of the islands...despite the tumultous past.
